Abstract
Venous insufficiency in lower extremities affects between 50-60% of the world’s adult population and it is estimated that 1% can develop an ulcer throughout their lives, increasing health cost and reducing patients’ quality of life.
A retrospective study was carried out to compare direct costs of self-care of a venous ulcer from the patient and their relatives versus nursing care in a Primary Care centre.
The cures performed by a trained wound care nurse have allowed the healing of a venous ulcer of 50 years old of evolution in 4 months and a half with a total cost of 1600€, which is equivalent to the cost of two and a half years of the patient’s selfcare, which only allowed the maintenance of an open ulcer over time.
